Let's talk breast augmentation. This is one of the most popular procedures performed by plastic surgeons worldwide and definitely one of the most common at StarkMD Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center. Although breast augmentation is perceived by many as a simple procedure, it is not as straightforward as one may think.
Patients present at different stages in their lives. For example, some patients are in their twenties and thirties before having children and are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts. Some present after having breastfed their children, feeling deflated and desiring to have their fullness restored. In other stages in life, people may want their breasts lifted with or without augmentation, but we can discuss that in a later "talk."
The consultation is a very important part of the process. It can be a big step for many women, so feel free to bring a partner along if that makes you more comfortable. This is where we talk and get to know each other a bit: I can learn your dislikes and desires, and you can learn about the process, which is perfectly customized to each patient. There are different types of implants, including saline and silicone, and we will discuss the pros and cons of each. The selection of the implant is very personal. What your friend has doesn't matter - I can't stress that part enough. The patient's anatomy and dimensions determine size. The shape can be chosen after size is determined: there are low, moderate, and high-profile implants. Lastly, we use our fantastic imaging system, the Vector H2 3D, to see what the implants will look like on your body. This system is 96% accurate, giving patients a sneak peek and a realistic understanding of what they will look like after the procedure is done.
Finally, we discuss recovery during the consult. All of my breast augmentations are considered "rapid recovery" breast augmentations. Pain is usually minimal, and we will be in close touch after surgery. My patients are up and out the day after surgery, participating in light activities, including coffee with a friend or watching their child in a sporting event. A day or two after that, you can return to work and do regular daily activities. In 3-4 weeks, you can return to full activity. I usually tell people that in three months, their breasts will look amazing, and by 6 months, you forget you even had it done!
As always, it is vital to select a plastic surgeon that is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery for any cosmetic procedure you choose.
