What are Injectables?

While cosmetic surgery is an excellent way to combat an aging face, many patients do not need to take such drastic measures to enhance their beauty. That is where injectables come in. In a quick, minimally invasive procedure, you can enhance your appearance and look up to several years younger — no anesthesia or downtime necessary.

Cosmetic injectables are products injected into the skin to reshape the facial contours and eliminate wrinkles. Some of the most common injectables you may know are wrinkle relaxers like Botox and dermal fillers such as Restylane. These prescription drugs counteract the effects of aging and play up your favorite facial features so you can feel more confidently you.

What do
Injectables do?

For sake of simplicity, injectables can be divided into two broad categories.

Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators, such as Botox, work by interfering with the nerve signals that control facial expressions. With the muscles at rest, the skin lying over the muscles remains smooth, relaxed, and free of wrinkles. Neuromodulators can also help to resolve bruxism (teeth grinding), a gummy smile, or a square jawline caused by overactive facial muscles.

Dermal Fillers

Think of dermal fillers like a liquid implant. A gel-like substance is injected into the skin to instantly fill wrinkles and enhance facial features so they appear more defined. Our dermal fillers address everything from deep creases around the mouth to thin lips, low cheekbones, hollowing under the eyes, sunken temples, or a weak chin.

Injectables Candidates

If you are interested in enhancing your facial features or smoothing facial lines, then injectables in Philadelphia may be right for you. The ideal candidate is not pregnant or nursing, does not smoke, and is in good overall health.

You should also have realistic expectations. Injectables can make you look younger and more attractive, but the goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not make you look like someone else. To be considered for facial fillers or wrinkle treatments such as Botox, you should be at least 18 years old.

What do
Injectables address?

  • Thin lips
  • Gaunt hands
  • A boxy jawline
  • A gummy smile
  • Flat cheekbones
  • Deep, pitted scars
  • Sagging eyebrows
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hollow tear troughs and temples

Our
Injectables

At Stark MD Plastic Surgery, our injectors will curate a personalized facial contouring plan for you. Based on your aesthetic goals and concerns, they may recommend one or more of the following:

Botox

Botox Cosmetic is a prescription drug that temporarily erases crows feet, forehead lines, and glabellar lines. We also offer Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau for treating facial expression lines.

Juvederm & Restylane

Juvederm and Restylane are the most popular dermal filler brands. Each collection boasts a versatile range of hyaluronic-acid-based injectables that address different areas of the face. HA fillers can treat wrinkles and volumize thin or hollow areas of skin such as the hands, lips, cheeks, under eyes, temples, chin, or nasolabial folds around the mouth.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a dermal filler that treats moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles. It can also accentuate facial features so they are more pleasing to the eye. As an added benefit, Radiesse increases natural collagen and elastin, the building blocks of firm, youthful skin. Made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres, it has a thicker formulation than Juvederm, so it holds up exceptionally well in highly expressive areas of the face, such as around the mouth. However, its thick formula is not suitable for thin-skinned areas such as the lips or below the eyes.

Perlane

Perlane, now called Restylane Lyft, is a hyaluronic acid filler with a large particle size. Because it lifts and fills simultaneously, it is excellent for addressing the chin, cheeks, aging hands, and coarse facial wrinkles.

Sculptra

Sculptra Aesthetic (poly-l-lactic acid) is a collagen-stimulating injectable that adds subtle volume the natural way. Instead of filling the skin with artificial material, it rebuilds collagen proteins over time to give the skin a plump, firm, smooth appearance. The results can last up to two years, outlasting many hyaluronic acid fillers on the market. However, up to four treatments may be needed for best effects.

Bellafill

Bellafill is the only dermal filler that is FDA-cleared for depressed acne scars. The impressive results of this collagen-based filler can last up to one year.

Belotero

Belotero is a filler that replaces lost volume and diminishes deep wrinkles for six months or longer for a beautiful, smooth appearance. Its soft, fluid consistency is preferred by patients that want the most subtle, natural-looking result possible. Belotero is less likely to result in lumps and bumps owing to its thin formulation. There is also less risk of a bluish tint when injected into the under-eye area, known as the Tyndall effect.

Injectables Benefits

At StarkMD Plastic Surgery, injectables are one of our most requested services — and for good reason. Without going under the knife, our patients enjoy a more youthful and well-rested appearance. Fillers not only reduce wrinkles and fine lines, they are also able to enhance facial features so they appear more attractive. Accentuating even one area, such as the lips, cheeks, or chin, can bring the rest of your features into harmony so your face appears more balanced, proportional, and aesthetically appealing.

Injectables can help you achieve:

  • Fewer wrinkles and fine lines
  • More attractive facial features
  • A younger-looking face and hands
  • A plump, smooth, well-rested complexion

Injectables Recovery

You may experience mild swelling, firmness, redness, or bruising depending on what part of the face you had treated. These side effects can last anywhere from a few hours to a week. That said, most patients enjoy the benefits of a more youthful, chiseled face shortly after their treatment. There is no downtime after injectables, and you can resume most of your daily activities immediately. If you have a special occasion approaching, book your Philadelphia injectables appointment at least two weeks in advance.

Injectables Results

It takes time to see the final results. Depending on the type of injectable, most patients notice improvements as soon as a few hours to days after their treatment, although the full results are generally visible within one to two weeks.

RESULTS

What can I expect after Botox?

Neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Juveau take several days to start working. Your wrinkles and fine lines should continue to relax over the next seven to ten days. Most patients enjoy a wrinkle-free complexion for three to four months on average. Simply return to StarkMD Plastic Surgery for a touch-up once your wrinkles start to return.

What can I expect after dermal fillers?

Most dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Belotero, Bellafill) take effect immediately, plumping your skin and filling wrinkles for a rejuvenated appearance. The exception is Sculptra, which may require several treatments to achieve the desired effect.

The results aren’t permanent, so you will need to come back after six months to two years, depending on the type of filler and how quickly your body metabolizes the ingredients.

Injectables FAQs

What is the difference between injectables and fillers?

All fillers are injectables, but not all injectables are fillers. Dermal fillers are simply a type of cosmetic injection your provider may suggest. Injectables like Botox treat the muscle rather than “filling” wrinkles or hollow areas. Our injectors will help you understand what products are best suited to your particular needs.

Are injectables safe?

For the right candidates, injectables are a low-risk way to enhance facial attractiveness. All cosmetic procedures carry risks. Our diamond-level injectables are trained in proper injection techniques to lower the risk of adverse events such as scarring, asymmetry, nodules, and the Tyndall effect. They will review all possible risks before your treatment begins.

How much do injectables cost?

The final cost of injectables depends on who performs your injections, how many units or vials of product your need, and whether you are treating one or more areas of your face. You will receive a full breakdown of costs at your consultation. Special financing and promotions may be available on certain products and services at StarkMD.
